The Walsh,
I met James Walsh when he came in to get a tattoo from me 10 years ago. During the tattoo we discovered that we had mutual friends, interests and mindset. James has been on top of the leaderboard in many different disciplines of racing and at the time of the tattoo I was training for a half Ironman. I found out quickly that James had won that same race a couple of years prior so I started picking his brain immediately.
Read MoreI was fortunate to be able to train and get coached by James through that race and did better than expected. We continued to train together weekly. On one of our training rides we got hit by a car while we were going 40mph. When I woke up I couldn’t move my legs so I had to claw my way over to James who ended up with a broken clavicle,ribs and punctured lung. My legs started working a few minutes later and we rode to the hospital in a ambulance together. We were very lucky that we both made it out of that situation.
We were back to competing as soon as we could and have continued to keep pushing ourselves since.
We have had many conversations on training and how to best go about winning a race. James always told me to “ease into the race” and my body would respond. He also said “You can’t be afraid to lose if you want to win.” Which to me meant that you shouldn’t be able to walk or breathe comfortably for a little bit after you complete a race. Leave it all out there.
I have incorporated this mindset in to all aspects of my life and it has helped tremendously.
He also said “That should be on a shirt” and here you go ten years later.
