ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Robusta Natural 16 Superior
Sourced from the fertile landscapes of Karagwe in Tanzania’s Kagera Region, Robusta 16 Superior embodies the strength and character that East African robustas are known for. Grown at elevations of 900–1300 meters, this coffee thrives in deep, nutrient-rich soils nourished by rainfall that stretches from September through June.
The region’s proximity to Lake Victoria provides a climatic buffer that shapes both the agricultural rhythm and the livelihood of local communities, where coffee and fishing coexist as key sources of income.
Production comes almost entirely from smallholder farmers, each typically managing about 1.2 acres of land. Collectively, these producers harvest an impressive 85,000–90,000 metric tons of dry cherry each season.
Robusta Natural 16 Superior is both powerful and nuanced. It’s an ideal green coffee for roasters seeking depth, crema, and a distinctive East African edge.
Natural Processing
Our Robusta Superior underwent a fully natural (dry) process, ideal for showcasing the boldness and depth of Tanzanian robusta.
Farmers handpicked ripe cherries, which were then sun-dried on patios for 18–25 days. Through slow, even drying the fruit’s sugars infused the seeds, amplifying their sweetness and body.
Robusta Vs. Arabica
While Arabica often dominates specialty conversations, Robusta plays an essential role in both flavor architecture and supply resilience worldwide. Here’s how Robusta 16 Superior compares:
Robusta (Coffea canephora) is an entirely different species of coffee than Arabica (Coffea arabica). Robusta thrives at lower altitudes than Arabica and is more tolerant of heat, humidity, and disease, making it a crucial crop as global climate patterns shift. Robusta is also prized for its higher caffeine content – a key factor in its natural pest resistance.
Tanzanian Robusta, especially from Kagera, benefits from volcanic soils, high rainfall, and traditional smallholder cultivation.
